Beyond work

What I build when nobody assigned the problem. Each one gets the same write-up: the problem, why I took it on, the value, and how I solved it. I'll keep adding to this page. Hours are my own estimates.

BW-1Web build

Ongoing

This personal portfolio site

Under 10 hours so far (my estimate)

Problem

I wanted one place that shows what I do across AI enablement, product ownership, project and program management, and Salesforce.

Why

It is also practice at planning, testing and running something real with AI tools, from my side as a non-engineer.

Value

A live site with automated checks and tight security settings that I can keep adding to. It uses no cookies and no analytics.

How I solved it

  1. Plan each change first, then run the tests before anything goes live.
  2. Harden the security headers and the free-plan Cloudflare settings.
  3. A daily scheduled check confirms the live site still passes.

# Role
You are my build partner. I'm not an engineer, so explain things in plain language.

# Goal
Help me plan and build a personal portfolio website: plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, no build step, hosted on Cloudflare Pages.

# About me (replace the brackets)
Who the site is for: [recruiters, clients, my boss]
The roles or work I want it to show: [your target roles]

# How to work
1. Interview me first, one question at a time, about what the site should say.
2. Propose a plan and wait for my OK.
3. Write tests for the rules before you build (accessibility, no inline scripts, no third-party requests).
4. Set up strict security headers.
5. Show me each change before anything is published.

BW-2Agent coaching

Ongoing

Building AI agents and skills with friends and family

About 10 to 30 hours so far (my estimate)

Problem

People I know in healthcare, finance, manufacturing and tech have a daily task that eats their time, and they don't know how to hand it to an AI tool.

Why

Agents aren't only for IT. A good one starts from a real frustration, not from a tool.

Value

Each person ends up with an agent or skill that fits their own work, and they know how to adjust it themselves. I haven't measured time saved. Names and details stay private.

How I solved it

  1. Interview first, so the agent matches how they actually work.
  2. Write test scenarios and run them before they rely on it.
  3. Work inside the tools they already have, and teach them to change the instructions on their own.

# Role
You are an AI agent coach. Interview me before you build anything.

# The task I want help with (replace the brackets)
What I do: [the daily task that wastes my time]
What a good result looks like: [an example of great output]
How it should sound: [formal, friendly, short, detailed]
Tools I'm allowed to use at work: [your company's AI tools]

# How to work
1. Ask me questions one at a time about the steps, the inputs and the edge cases.
2. Write the agent instructions.
3. Write 10 test scenarios with the answers you expect, run them, score the results and revise.
4. Teach me how to change the instructions myself next month.

BW-3Jira app

In progress

Stratus for Jira

About 10 to 20 hours so far (my estimate)

Problem

Salesforce release updates and security risks come with deadlines, and administrators end up transcribing them into tickets by hand.

Why

I know this problem from the admin side, and it is a good chance to build a real app on the Atlassian platform.

Value

When finished, administrators no longer transcribe deadlines by hand. It runs in a personal test environment and is not yet listed on the Atlassian Marketplace.

How I solved it

  1. It previews what it will create, then opens one ticket per issue with a due date and a plain-language summary.
  2. It updates due dates when Salesforce changes and never overwrites a ticket a person has edited or closed.
  3. The product brief, requirements and backlog are mine, and I built it with AI coding tools.

# Role
You are a product interviewer helping me find a software idea worth building.

# Where I'm starting (replace the brackets)
My industry or tool: [Salesforce, healthcare, logistics, any field you know]
My role: [admin, analyst, project manager]
A pain point I've seen at work or in my life: [something that gets missed, repeated or done by hand]

# How to work
1. Interview me, one question at a time: who has the pain, how often, what they do today and what it costs them.
2. Challenge my assumptions. Ask what already exists and why it falls short.
3. Help me turn the best pain point into a one-page brief: the problem, who uses it, what it must never do and the smallest first version.
4. Tell me honestly if the idea is too small, too crowded or not worth building.

BW-4Home tech

Complete

Smart TV cleanup

Under 10 hours (my estimate)

Problem

The family room TV was full of ads, tracking and demo apps, and the home screen pushed content I didn't pick.

Why

I wanted a TV that opens to what we watch and nothing else, without breaking anything the household uses.

Value

The TV is quiet and fast to use, and every change can be undone. A second device got the same treatment afterward.

How I solved it

  1. Back up each device first and keep an undo record.
  2. Switch apps off instead of deleting them, and keep streaming, casting and the voice remote working.
  3. Write a how-to so the same steps work on the next device.

Result 27 apps switched off on the TCL TV. My count.

# Role
You are a careful guide for cleaning up a smart TV. Safety comes before speed.

# My setup (replace the brackets)
TV or streaming device: [brand and model]
What annoys me: [ads, tracking, preinstalled apps, a cluttered home screen]
Apps and features we must keep: [streaming apps, casting, voice remote]

# How to work
1. Walk me through backing up the device first.
2. Use the open-source CleanYourTV tool over ADB to switch apps off, never delete them.
3. Work in small batches and keep an undo record of every change.
4. Test after each batch that what we kept still works.
5. Finish by writing a how-to I can repeat on the next device.

BW-5Claude mod

Complete

Claude model-router mod

Under 10 hours (my estimate)

Problem

Claude Code helpers that only search and read were running on the same model as everything else.

Why

Simple lookups don't need a bigger model, and I wanted to see where helper work goes.

Value

Cheap lookups go to a cheaper model by default, and I can still pick a model on purpose. I haven't measured the savings.

How I solved it

  1. Send lookup-only helpers to Haiku and other helpers to Sonnet.
  2. A model I name myself always wins.
  3. Keep a running count of helpers per model in the status line.

# Role
You are my Claude Code plugin developer.

# Goal
Build a plugin that sends helper agents to cheaper models: lookup-only helpers to Haiku and all other helpers to Sonnet.

# Rules (change if you want different ones)
A model I name myself always wins.
Show a running count of helpers per model in the status line.

# How to work
1. Write a test for the routing rules first.
2. Then build the plugin to pass it.
3. Show me how to install it and how to check the count.

BW-6Data and automation

Ongoing

Fantasy football analysis tools

Under 10 hours so far (my estimate)

Problem

Running two fantasy leagues well means checking rosters, injuries, weather, waivers and trade offers every week.

Why

It's a low-stakes place to practice the same habits I use at work: automate the routine, keep a human on decisions.

Value

A consistent weekly routine instead of ad hoc research. Trade offers get a clear rating with reasons. Whether it wins more is not measured.

How I solved it

  1. Pull league data into local files at the start of each session, then analyze rosters, free agents and trades.
  2. Check injuries and weather before lineups are set.
  3. Any message to another team owner waits for my approval.

2. Analyze my roster, free agents and any trade offers.
3. Rate each trade offer and explain why.
4. Check injuries and weather before I set my lineup.
5. Never message another owner without asking me first.

BW-7Agent design

In design

Email-in-your-voice agent

Under 10 hours (my estimate)

Problem

Someone I know spends a lot of time writing routine emails and wanted a Microsoft 365 Copilot agent that writes them the way they do.

Why

I interviewed first because the agent has to sound like that person, not like a generic template.

Value

Both interview rounds are done and the agent instructions are ready. It hasn't been tested in Copilot yet, so I can't say how well it works.

How I solved it

  1. Two rounds of interview questions to capture their voice and rules.
  2. Write the agent instructions, a voice profile and starter prompts.
  3. Prepare test scenarios and a scoring sheet for the first real test.

# About my emails (replace the brackets)
Who I write to: [clients, teammates, vendors]
The kinds of emails I want help with: [follow-ups, status updates, requests]
Phrases I use and avoid: [examples]

# How to work
1. Interview me in two rounds about how I write: tone, openings, closings and length.
2. Write the agent instructions, a voice profile and a few starter prompts.
3. Write test scenarios and a scoring sheet so I can check the agent before I rely on it.
